Track Focus: Sound Art

Exploring new dimensions of listening — from ecological soundscapes to immersive 3D worlds.

How can sound become more than something we hear — something we inhabit, touch, and co-create with? At Sonic Days 2025, the Sound Art track invites audiences to explore the boundaries between technology, environment, and artistic practice through a series of talks and case studies by internationally active sound artists and researchers.

This year’s programme highlights diverse approaches to listening, composition, and sonic experience. Among other talks, you can experience:

  • Elysha Zaide — Designing for Play & the Inner Child
Immersive music technologist Elysha Zaide draws on over two decades of experience in multimedia composition, sound design, and innovation for brands such as Google, Ableton, and BBC. In this session, she asks how sound can be designed to spark wonder and joy — in a creative world often driven by technical perfection and polished production tools. Through stories and demonstrations, Zaide explores how reconnecting with play and imagination can open new artistic perspectives.
  • Marie Koldkjær Højlund — Case Study: Snedronningen
Composer and researcher Marie Højlund presents the sound world of Snedronningen (The Snow Queen), The Royal Danish Theatre’s large-scale outdoor performance. Working in dialogue with actors, nature, and the surrounding environment, Højlund shows how sound and music can shape three-dimensional experiences in open-air settings. The talk offers insight into composing for outdoor spaces and the creative potential of collaboration across artforms.
  • Devin Arne — Off-Grid: Ecological Sound Design for Site-Specific Performance
Composer and educator Devin Arne shares his work for Terra: Bodies and Territories, a site-specific dance performance staged in a nature reserve. Blending ambisonic field recordings with custom-built, battery-powered sound systems, Arne demonstrates how ecological awareness and technical innovation can merge into an immersive musical environment. His approach encourages sustainable, accessible methods of sound creation that connect performers and audiences with the natural world.
  • Carl Svensson — A Portal to New Worlds of Sound
Sound designer and researcher Carl Svensson from the Norwegian Film School explores how 3D audio technologies open creative possibilities across film, performance, and virtual spaces. His presentation discusses artistic methods for working with spatial sound and reflects on how artistic research can inform technological innovation and design beyond the arts.

Together, these sessions form a rich dialogue on how sound art can expand our ways of perceiving, designing, and engaging with the world around us. So sign up for the Sound Art talks now on Sched and prepare to get inspired!
