The Art of Sound: Shelley Roden on Elevating Film Through Foley

Foley artist Shelley Roden will be presenting at Sonic Days 2024. Roden currently works at Skywalker Sound in northern California and has 25 years of experience creating Foley sound effects for live-action feature films, animated films, series and games. Most recently, she has contributed to Inside Out 2, Despicable Me 4, Marvel Studios’ Black Panther, and the series Andor.  Roden is an Emmy award winner and a multiple Golden Reel award winner, and she also worked on Top Gun: Maverick and Dunkirk, films that won the Academy Award for best sound.

With a background in athletics, music, and theatre, Roden brings an energetic and nuanced approach to her work. She orchestrates sound effects as musical elements, exploring an improvisational style that allows for experimentation and discovery through the collaborative process. Roden holds a Bachelor of Science in Cinema and Photography from Ithaca College. Roden has worked on over two hundred projects, including well-known titles like Avengers: EndgameTurning RedEncantoRaya and the Last Dragon, and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

In addition to her film work, Roden has been an affiliate faculty instructor at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Kinetic Imaging department since 2018, offering workshops and presentations to help students develop skills in listening, problem-solving, and performance through the study of Foley concepts and techniques. She has also worked with high school students, elementary students, and historically underserved youth, and is currently mentoring several emerging filmmakers and sound artists.

Roden is in the process of writing book one in a series that will feature personal interviews with veteran foley artists and sound designers. She recently wrote the first chapter during a two-week artist residency at the Ingmar Bergman estate on Fårö. Her participation in Sonic Days 2024 offers attendees an opportunity to learn from her extensive experience in Foley and sound design on the Film & TV track.
