Be in the room: Tonebenders Live explores the future of dialogue editing

What does it take to turn production recordings into clear, convincing dialogue? Tonebenders returns to Sonic Days for a live episode with Emma Butt, Korey Pereira and Thomas Perez-Pape, hosted by Tim Muirhead.

Be in the room: Tonebenders Live explores the future of dialogue editing

The discussion brings together practitioners working across films and series to explore the tools, techniques and judgement behind dialogue editing. It is an opportunity to hear the conversation in the room as it happens, with the working experience of several sound professionals in one place.

A podcast about the people behind the sound

Tonebenders talks with the sonic artists behind films, games and series, making production experience and craft accessible through conversation. Its episodes connect the finished work with the people and decisions that audiences rarely encounter on screen.

There is already a Sonic Days chapter in that archive. In the live episode recorded at Sonic Days 2025, Tim Muirhead spoke with James Mather, Tormod Ringnes and Kim Christensen about sound design for established film worlds. Listening to it offers a sense of the format before joining this year’s discussion.

From production sound to the finished dialogue track

This year’s live session focuses on the future of dialogue editing. Emma, Korey and Thomas will draw on their work to discuss the obstacles between production recordings and a dialogue track that serves the film or series, and the tools they use to address them.

Dialogue carries both information and performance. An edit must support what a character is saying while preserving how they say it, and the surrounding sound needs to belong to the scene. The session gives practitioners a shared setting in which to discuss those decisions and how their approaches are changing.

Hear different working perspectives

For dialogue editors, mixers, filmmakers and students, the value of a live conversation lies in hearing how experienced people approach the same area of craft from different working positions. The programme brings the future of the discipline into contact with the practical work of delivering a soundtrack.

If you know Tonebenders through headphones, Sonic Days offers the chance to join the recording in person. Add the live episode to your programme and bring your curiosity about the work behind the voices.
