What does a museum sound like? Inside V&A East with Coda to Coda

How do you compose a soundscape for a gallery that brings together art, architecture, design, performance and fashion? Sam Britton and Will Worsley of Coda to Coda will share their approach at Sonic Days.

What does a museum sound like? Inside V&A East with Coda to Coda

Their session in the Sound in Museums track explores the ideas and development behind the soundscape for the Why We Make galleries at London’s V&A East Museum.

A gallery about why people create

The V&A describes Why We Make as two permanent galleries bringing together more than 500 objects. The displays connect different periods and creative disciplines through contemporary questions, including identity, wellbeing, creative communities and environmental action.

That breadth gives sound an interesting role. Visitors move between objects and ideas at their own pace, creating a different kind of listening situation from a film or concert. The Sonic Days session offers an opportunity to explore this setting through a specific project and the people who created its soundscape.

Sound as part of exhibition design

Coda to Coda’s practice spans composition, sound design, installations and audio production. On its project page, the studio presents the V&A East work within an approach that places sound early in the design process.

Britton and Worsley will discuss the thinking behind this commission and how the soundscape developed. For sound designers, curators and exhibition teams, it is a chance to hear directly from the makers about the relationship between sound and the visitor experience.
